Mark Neufeld’s work can be described as a process of synthesis, in which sets of oppositions or mirror image relationships are revealed. His most resent installation, Lumpf, (simultaneously both abstract and representational, grotesque and beautiful), suggests creative processes which might include both accumulation and abandonment. Lumpf is comprised of three related bodies of work: Cake paintings, Heap paintings, and a 4 piece sculpture and sound installation entitled, Good Times, Bad Times. The Heap paintings distill notions of the disordered interior, which functions as both an image and model for an approach to painting. All three Lumpf components explore the boundaries between high art and low art, combining academic allusions and a subtle humour.

Neufeld is currently living and working in Berlin, Germany. His work has been shown in Canada, the US, Germany, and Australia. Neufeld was chosen as the first inaugural recipient of the Joseph Plaskett Award, which was created to support an artist for a year in Europe. He completed an MFA at the University of Victoria, Canada (2005).
